Tor: giving privacy decisions back to users

Tor is a free-software anonymizing network that helps people around the world use the Internet in safety. Tor's 9000 volunteer relays carry traffic for millions of daily users, including ordinary citizens who want protection from identity theft and prying corporations, corporations who want to look at a competitor's website in private, people around the world whose Internet connections are censored, and even governments and law enforcement.

In this session I'll try to balance technical explanations (how Tor works) with social and community explanations (who uses Tor and why). Tor is of course open source, but to us transparency means far more than a software license. I'll give some context for censorship circumvention, for surveillance, for onion services, for why a decentralized design is better for users, and then I will stick around for the rest of the conference to answer questions.
