AI is rapidly changing the software landscape, from how software is created to how it is consumed and monetized. This talk explores what these shifts may mean for open source, the challenges they create, and the new opportunities they may unlock. Sobre Peter Zaitsev: Peter Zaitsev is an open source entrepreneur, technologist, and longtime advocate for open communities and open software. He is the co-founder of Percona and has spent more than two decades building open source companies, products, communities, and events around the belief that important technology should remain accessible, transparent, and user-driven. Beyond Percona, Peter is involved in a range of open source and technology initiatives, from supporting emerging projects and founders to organizing technical communities and events. He is particularly interested in how open source evolves as the technology industry changes—across cloud, infrastructure, developer tools, data, and increasingly AI. A self-described open source geek, Peter enjoys exploring new technologies, challenging conventional industry models, and connecting people who are building the next generation of open technology. Databases are among the most demanding workloads running on Kubernetes. They stress storage, observability, backup, and recovery systems in ways that many stateless applications never do. Drawing on years of production troubleshooting and performance investigations across PostgreSQL and MySQL environments, this talk examines what databases reveal about the operational realities of Kubernetes. We'll discuss common failure patterns, the strengths and limitations of database operators, performance expectations versus production behavior, and why many database incidents originate in the surrounding platform rather than the database itself. This is not a talk about whether databases belong on Kubernetes. Instead, it is a practical look at the tradeoffs, complexity, and operational costs that emerge when stateful systems meet cloud-native infrastructure. Attendees will leave with a framework for evaluating database platform decisions based on reliability, performance, and operational cost. Sobre Peter Zaitsev: Peter Zaitsev is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Percona, Coroot and other tech companies. As one of the leading experts in Open Source strategy and database optimization, Peter has applied his technical knowledge and entrepreneurial drive to contribute as a board member and advisor to several open source startups. Additionally, Peter is the co-author of the book "High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backup and Replication," one of the most popular books on MySQL performance. Show less
